"Hello Sailor: The Sailor Icon in Pop Culture"

February 11 through fall 2016

Guest Curator Alex Stadler explores the classic image of the sailor in the white “dixie-cup” hat, as portrayed in 20th century American pop culture. His Community Gallery exhibition, Hello Sailor: The Sailor Icon in Pop Culture, brings together graphics, photos, movies, artwork and advertisements.

“Starting with the Museum's permanent collection, found images, acquired objects, and my own illustration—is my response as an illustrator/designer/curator to the classic image of the sailor in the white ‘dixie-cup’ hat,” said Alex Stadler. “A three-dimensional mash-up of everything sailor from 1930s sheet music to Jean Paul Gauthier perfume ads to Kim Kardashian on her way to a Halloween party, Hello Sailor will be (I hope) a playful investigation of what it is about the sailor image that has such a powerful hold on popular imagination to this day.”

Alex Stadler is an author/illustrator, artist and textile designer. His is also the owner/curator of stadler-Kahn, a shop/gallery hybrid at 1724 Sansom Street in Center City Philadelphia.
