Introduction to Celestial Navigation


Independence Seaport Museum is offering another round of Introduction to Celestial Navigation! The course takes place over three Saturdays in March, inside the Museum. The class is designed as a practical, how-to course using GPS for offshore navigation with sun sight taking and using a sextant as a backup technique. Subject matter includes: basic concepts of celestial navigation; how to use the mariner's sextant to take sights of the sun; the importance and techniques of accurate time determination; use of the Nautical Almanac; how to reduce sights to establish lines of position (LOPs); and the use of GPS, special charts, plotting sheets and other navigational data for offshore positioning and passage planning. This course is offered in partnership with Kingsway Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, the premier nautical education organization in America.

Premium Tours at the Seaport Museum

 

Independence Seaport Museum is now offering specialized, behind the scenes tours. Take a below-decks tour of Olympia, discover rare maps from the collection, or explore modern boat building practices at the Museum, all with a guided tour from an expert in each field. We have also partnered with Moshulu to provide lunch and dinner meal packages with your tour.  All meals are served aboard Moshulu, the world’s largest four-masted sailing ship still afloat and AAA Four Diamond-rated restaurant located right on Penn's Landing.

Explore Historic Old City

Independence Seaport Museum presents three walking tours ideal for groups. Experience The Birth of American Armed Forces, Benjamin Franklin's First Visit to Philadelphia, or The Real Pirates of Philadelphia as you walk through the historic waterfront neighborhood.

See where the historic Tun Tavern once stood. Walk the streets where a young Ben Franklin walked. Discover where the real pirates of Philadelphia did business. One of the best-kept secrets in Philadelphia!

All tours start and end at the Museum and run about one hour and fifteen minutes. Prices are $15 for adults and $10 for kids. Tours are available by advance registration only. Call 215-413-8630 to schedule a tour.

 

Behind-the-Scenes Tours
of Cruiser Olympia & Submarine Becuna
First Saturday of Every Month, 12-4 pm from April through December

Explore areas of the cruiser Olympia, Admiral Dewey's Spanish-American War flagship, and the World War II submarine Becuna, normally off limits to the public. See the Olympia's triple expansion steam engines, boiler room, and working ash hoist, and the Becuna's conning tower.

Must be 12 or older and able to climb steep stairs. Comfortable walking shoes recommended. Ships may close in severe weather. Ships are not handicapped accessible.

Boatbuilding 101
Everything you need to know to build your own boat
...in just two weekends!

Learn from the expert craftsmen in Independence Seaport Museum's boat-building shop, Workshop on the Water. This unique, hands-on class takes the new builder through all phases of boat building, including getting the most out of a set of plans, building the backbone, steaming frames, planking, spar-making, interior joinery, and more. While you will not build a boat, each participant will construct the most difficult pieces and learn enough to proceed alone with confidence. All tools and materials are provided.

Participants must be at least age 16.
