Spring Tune-Up Workshop
Overwhelmed with the options of products and materials to use on your boat? New to boat ownership and not sure what needs to be done? The Independence Seaport Museum’s Workshop on the Water is offering a 2-4 day workshop this Spring 2015, covering boat maintenance and repair. We’ll teach you tips and techniques to get your boat ready for the season, show you ways to maintain your vessel throughout the season and answer any questions you have. Sign up for one weekend...or both!
Week 1 – Maintenance and Prep
April 25 & 26
$85 for current members
This weekend workshop will cover the basics of preparing your boat for the season. We’ll review what to look for, cover common repair and maintenance woodwork such as repair/replacement of planks, framing, coamings and rub rails. Also, you will learn about different types of small boat caulking. Finally we will cover preparing your boat for paint, vanish or oiling to protect your craft for the upcoming season on the water.
Week 2 – Finishing and Rigging
May 2 & 3
$85 for current members
This weekend will give instruction about the different types of finishes appropriate for the marine environment. We will cover the pros and cons and why you might choose between topsides and bottom paint, varnish, oil, Waterlox and Cetol. Finally we will talk about small boat rigging and season long maintenance practices.

Everything you need to know to build your own boat
...in just two weekends!
Learn from the expert craftsmen in Independence Seaport Museum's boat-building shop, Workshop on the Water. This unique,hands-on class takes the new builder through all phases of boat building, including getting the most out of a set of plans, building the backbone, steaming frames, planking, spar-making, interior joinery, and more. While you will not build a boat, each participant will construct the most difficult pieces and learn enough to proceed alone with confidence. All tools and materials are provided.
Participants must be at least age 16.
