Everything you need to know to build your own boat
...in just two weekends!
Learn from the expert craftsmen in Independence Seaport Museum's boat-building shop, Workshop on the Water. This unique,hands-on class takes the new builder through all phases of boat building, including getting the most out of a set of plans, building the backbone, steaming frames, planking, spar-making, interior joinery, and more. While you will not build a boat, each participant will construct the most difficult pieces and learn enough to proceed alone with confidence. All tools and materials are provided.
Participants must be at least age 16.

Introduction to Celestial Navigation
Independence Seaport Museum is offering another round of Introduction to Celestial Navigation! The course takes place over four Saturdays beginning in February, inside the Museum. The session is designed as a practical, how-to course using GPS for offshore navigation with sun sight taking and using a sextant as a backup technique. Subject matter includes: basic concepts of celestial navigation; how to use the mariner's sextant to take sights of the sun; the importance and techniques of accurate time determination; use of the Nautical Almanac; how to reduce sights to establish lines of position (LOPs); and the use of GPS, special charts, plotting sheets and other navigational data for offshore positioning and passage planning.
This course is offered in partnership with Kingsway Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, the premier nautical education organization in America.
